ACE-Uganda Hosts Prof. Samuel Flores on a Courtesy Visit

On the 15th of June 2026, the African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data Intensive Sciences (ACE-Uganda) received a courtesy visit from Prof. Samuel Flores, Director of Research School in Bioinformatics at Stockholm University, Sweden.

Prof. Flores was accompained by Dr. Ivan Mwebaze, Head of Research and Innovations at Makerere University Biomedical Research Medical Centre(MakBRC), and Dr. Samuel Kirimunda, Head of Operations at Makerere University Biomedical Research Medical Centre(MakBRC)

Prof. Flores is a distinguished researcher working on macromolecular structure and dynamics, primarily from the computational side. His work includes building multiressolution models, studying protein=protein interactions, predicting RNA structure, and developing web servers for scientific applications.

He servers as the Dean of Students(Studierektor) for MedBioInfo, the Swedish National Graduate School in Medical Bioinformatics, which provides courses, mentorship, and networking to PhD students in Bioinformatics across Sweden.

The visit was aimed at gaining a better understanding of the bioinformatics academic landscape in Uganda. Prof. Flores sought to learn about the training programmes, research activities, and infrastructure available in the country, with a particular interest in how bioinformatics is being intergrated into higher education and research.

During the visit, the delegation toured ACE-Uganda Facilities, including the High Perfomance Computing(HPC) cluster, the VR Lab, and the Telelearning Facility. They also held discussions with the ACE team to learn more about the Center's training programmes, research projects, and the broader bioinformatics ecosystem in Uganda.
