Recognizing their vital role, the African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data Intensive Sciences (ACE-Uganda), has launched the HPC for HIV Project, an initiative that will equip systems administrators with world-class training at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin.
The project reflects a simple but important idea: investing in cutting-edge technology is only part of the solution. Sustainable scientific progress depends on the people who keep that technology running.
Modern HIV research generates enormous amounts of data. From analysing viral genomes and tracking drug resistance to modelling disease outbreaks and supporting vaccine development, researchers increasingly rely on high-performance computing to answer complex scientific questions. But without skilled professionals managing these systems, even the most powerful supercomputers cannot reach their full potential.
Through the training at TACC, participants will learn from leading experts including Dr. James Carson, Director of Life Sciences Computing, and Dr. Jennifer Schopf, Director of Networking Partnerships. They will gain practical skills in managing HPC infrastructure, optimizing system performance, supporting research users, strengthening cybersecurity, and adopting emerging technologies that are transforming biomedical research.
The knowledge they bring back will directly strengthen research at both ACE-Uganda and UVRI, institutions that are at the forefront of HIV research in Uganda. Better-managed computing systems will enable researchers to analyze data more efficiently, collaborate more effectively with international partners, and spend less time overcoming technical barriers and more time making scientific discoveries.
The impact extends far beyond the administrators themselves. As they return from TACC, they will mentor colleagues, improve institutional capacity, and help build a stronger computational research ecosystem for Uganda. Their expertise will support not only today's HIV studies but also future work in genomics, artificial intelligence, epidemic preparedness, and precision medicine.
The initiative also represents a broader shift in science; one that prioritizes building local expertise alongside research infrastructure. Rather than relying on external technical support, institutions like ACE-Uganda are investing in people who can sustain and continually improve the systems that underpin scientific innovation.
The partnership between ACE-Uganda, UVRI, and TACC demonstrates how international collaboration can strengthen local leadership. By combining global expertise with local talent, the project is helping create a new generation of African HPC specialists capable of supporting world-class research from within the continent.
Their work may happen behind the scenes, but its impact will be felt across laboratories, research institutions, and public health programs. Every faster analysis, every successful collaboration, and every scientific breakthrough depends on reliable computational infrastructure, and on the people who make it possible.
As these administrators return home, they will bring more than technical skills. They will bring new ideas, international networks, and the expertise needed to ensure that African researchers have the computational support to tackle some of the world's most pressing health challenges.
