Gerald Mboowa, PhD

Dr. Gerald Mboowa is a genomics and bioinformatics scientist with expertise in pathogen genomics, antimicrobial resistance, infectious disease surveillance, and data-intensive health research. He is a Senior Data Engineer in Global Pathogen Genomics at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where he supports scalable pathogen genomics workflows, cloud-based analysis platforms, and training for public health laboratories and research institutions. Gerald is also affiliated with the African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences at Makerere University, Uganda. His work focuses on strengthening genomic surveillance capacity across African settings, including the implementation of reproducible bioinformatics workflows for bacterial, fungal, viral, and metagenomic data analysis. He has contributed to regional and continental pathogen genomics initiatives, including training, workflow development, outbreak analytics, and antimicrobial resistance surveillance. His professional interests include equitable access to genomics technologies, reproducible bioinformatics, cloud-enabled public health analysis, infectious disease outbreak response, and translating genomic data into actionable public health evidence.
