Mugume Twinamatsiko Atwine

Mugume Twinamatsiko Atwine is a health data scientist and machine learning engineer at ACE Uganda, within Makerere University’s Infectious Diseases Institute. He has more than ten years of experience in computing and more than six in machine learning. His skills cover deep learning, natural language processing and the deployment of models in production (MLOps). His work focuses on language technology for health in Luganda. He builds chat assistants that answer only from vetted sources, and the English–Luganda data needed to train them. At ACE he led the technical work on the COAST and HEAL projects. In the DS-I Africa program, he leads the eLwazi Data Models, Storage, Registries and Catalogue Working Group and co-develops the open-source Metadata Harmonisation Tool. He holds an MSc in Computer Networking from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Malaysia, and a BSc in Computer Science from Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda. His interests are in leveraging AI to solve real world problems.
